Cake Contest

Time and place:

The Cake Contest will take place on Saturday, August 19 in Mayborn Science Theater, Room 127.

  • Register online by midnight Thursday, August 17.
  • 10 - 11 am             Registration check-in (entry fee of $10) and setup
  • 11 am - 12 pm      Judging
  • 12 - 1 pm               People's Choice voting
  • 2 pm                       Awards

Contest Rules

  • All entries MUST have a "Geek"-related theme.
  • The cupcake division will be open to children from 6 to 12 years of age only.
  • Cake division
  • Cakes must use real ingredients only.
  • The use of non-edible materials is discouraged and can affect your overall score (with the exception of pillars and dividers). Fabric, ribbon, etc. may be used as part of the decoration of the display board only. No porcelain items will be allowed. Edible images, which are computer-generated, will not be allowed. Wires and non-edible stamens are allowed if used in the creation of decorations.
  • All tiered cake entries must be the sole work of one contestant. Cakes may be covered in either regular icing, buttercream, Swiss meringue or fondant.
  • Entries must be footed to facilitate handling and minimize damage. Example- Use a cake divider plate, plastic push pins, or glue small pieces of Styrofoam to the bottom of cake board
  • There is a four foot height limit.
  • No entrant will be allowed to remove his/her cake from display area after judging.
  • Entrants must bring an "Art Description" printed on a 3x5 size card describing the cake and the theme.
  •   **Note: There is no electricity or running water for your display(s). All non-edible items should be labeled with your name and contact information.**

Judging

  • Judges and/or the show committee shall enforce all policies and regulations and have the right to categorize any entry if necessary.
  • Placement and disqualification of entries will be final. No entry displaying poor taste will be allowed. Judges and/or show committee reserves the right to disqualify entries that are in poor taste, as well as remove them.
  • The Cake Competition judges reserve the right to re-categorize, refuse and/or disqualify entries as necessary.
  • All of the Judges' decisions regarding category changes are final.
  • Members of the general public will be provided ballots for the People's Choice award.
  • Decisions of the judges are final. Entries will be judged on points awarded per entry.
  • Entrants need to be present or have a representative present to cut cake for judges beginning at 11 am.
  • Cakes and cupcakes will be judged on a total of 100 points.
    • Taste and texture - 20 points
    • Overall appearance - 20 points
    • Artistic presentation and geekiness - 30 points
    • Complexity of technique - 15 points
    • Neatness of cake covering and decorations -15 points
  • In the event of a tie, the judges will determine placement.
  • Decisions of the judges are FINAL..
  • All non-edible elements should be boxed by cake vendor. We will not hold items. Items left after Sunday will be discarded.
  • **All entries must be set up by 10 a.m. and cleared away by 3 p.m. on the day of the contest.**

Awards (All entry fees will be paid out to contest winners.)

  • Best of Show ribbons in all three categories will be chosen by the judges. Awards not claimed by the close of the event will be forfeited.

  • Best of Show - Cupcakes
  • Overall Geekiness Winner
  • Certificate of Participation
